JOHN DICKENSON

The inventor of the Modern Hang Glider in 1963

COUNTER CLAIMS FROM OTHER PEOPLE

...................................

1) .Bill Bennett's article "New Endurance Record" by David Lynch 1988.

2) .Cross Country Magazine article of Hang Gliding in Indonesia in 1955. There is very little known about the story in this article but we are endevouring to learn more about it. If it is true this is an amazing story, but we have cause to be skeptical at this stage. There is no known link between the events described here and modern hang gliders. The similarities with the Dickenson Wing are amazing and we have included this item on the site, but we caution that it is not proven that this story is factual and even a quick perusal of the photos raises many questions. We certainly do not guarantees it’s accuracy or authenticity.

3) Bill Moyes The coming of the Birdmen.This is an amazing article, Bill Moyes gives his account of the history in the sport of hang gliding. Bill does not mention his long time friend Bill Bennett and of the equivalent part Bennett played. He also avoids mentioning John Dickenson, who not only taught both Bills how to fly, but also invented their hang glider. Also over looked in this account are Mike Burns and Dick Swinbourne, whose Company Aerstructures was the first commercial manufacturer of hang gliders in the world. Bill also seems to have forgotten all of the help John Dickenson gave to him in helping to scale the glider up to deal with Bill’s weight, and the increased loading that put on the wing. Both Bill Moyes and Bill Bennett bought their first hang gliders from Aerostructures and later set about building copies of them.Bill Moyes later used snow-skis to launch his Aerostructures built hang glider from Mt Crackenback for what was possibly a record length free glide at the time. This in itself was a considerable feat to undertake in those days.

Three sentences in the article are true, but the credit belongs to John Dickenson and not Bill Moyes;
1. At long last, man’s oldest dream was to take substance and literally soar.

2. able to achieve stable, controllable personal flight for the first time in history

3, Man had finally shaken free of his shackles. A major sport was born.

These sentences show that Bill Moyes appreciated the historical significance of John Dickenson’s achievements, and that he has attempted to take the credit from John.

4) The Oz Report. A review of the; "Francis Rogallo, John Dickenson and Bill Moyes" interview about the early history of hang gliding. Please note that the un-cut video can be seen in the "Video Section" of this web site, and the Youtube sanitised version can be seen in the "Youtube Section” .

5) Minutes from the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia's annual General meeting on 13th Oct 2007, recording that Rod Fuller and Pat Crowe were nominated for recognition of their part in the birth of hang gliding, and of the flying of the very first Dickenson Wing at Grafton in 1963. Unfortunately for the sport of hang gliding and Australia both motions were defeated.

6) An extract taken from the "Action and Motion Register", during a Hang Gliding Federation of Australia's Board meeting held at the Y Hotel Sydney (date unknown) in which John Dickenson is nominated for the F.I.A. Hang Gliding Diploma Award.

7) An extract from the minutes of the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia's Board meeting held at the Quality Hotel Melbourne on 17th, 18th March 2007. It mentions problems that arrived during a demonstration flight to recreate the very first hang glider flight the Jacarada Festival held in Grafton. It also mentions that John Dickenson has been awarded the F.I.A. Hang Gliding Diploma.
